Capacity Planning

We translate system behaviour into a practical view of what capacity is needed, where it is needed and which decisions cannot wait. Adequacy is only the start; networks, flexibility and delivery constraints shape the pathway.

The planning question

What must exist, where, and by when for the system to remain workable?

A capacity plan has to connect demand, generation, storage, interconnection and operational flexibility. We examine shortages, curtailment, utilisation, flows and binding constraints, then compare infrastructure pathways against the planning objective.

The answer changes with demand, weather, technology cost, policy and the treatment of flexibility. We therefore present capacity needs as scenario-dependent ranges and decision gates, not as a single forecast with false precision.

Adequacy and constraint analysis

Our work follows hourly and annual system behaviour across countries and climate cases. We use shortages, curtailment, price spreads, utilisation and cross-border flows to identify whether the limiting factor is energy, capacity, flexibility or network access.

Infrastructure pathways

We connect model outputs to generation, storage, conversion, import and network needs across planning horizons. The sequence matters: a robust pathway shows what is required now, what remains conditional and which later choices depend on earlier infrastructure.

Economic evidence with caveats

We assess capital and operating assumptions, asset revenues and system value where the question requires it. We also state what the calculation excludes, such as unmodelled revenue streams or simplified market treatment, so the comparison remains fit for purpose.
